First time I fell into the water in Venice, I was 6 years old.
My father was always sending me and my brother to take our small rowing boat (topa) from the end to the beginning of the canal in Castello district where we lived.
I was in charge of holding the stick at the stern, while my brother was pulling with energy the other stick from the bow so to turn the boat and reach the destination 200 meters far from there..
I remember I remained fixed on the stick when the boat was quickly moving far from it and I slipped under the water in less than one second.
Here in Venice we consider it as a propitiatory rite as a child to fall into the water of the Lagoon!
So it was ok! And the smell (parfume?) of mud and saline water became part of my soul.
